Mesothelioma is a rare kind of a cancer which attacks the mesothelial cells. These cells cover the outside of most of our internal body organs. The cells also form a kind of a lining which is referred to as the mesothelium. Mesothelioma cancer can develop in the tissues covering the lungs or abdomen. Mesothelioma is a cancerous disease which has the potential of becoming terminal. If one wishes to proceed towards understanding Mesothelioma then it becomes very important for him to have a through insight into this disease and to understand as to what causes it.
Mesothelioma cancer is a result of presence of deposits of asbestos inside the human body. This asbestos mostly reaches inside the body through the aerial route when asbestos particles are inhaled by means of air, dust and fibers. Prolonged exposure in an environment which is saturated with asbestos particles is considered to be the chief cause for the occurrence of Mesothelioma. There are 3 types of Mesothelioma that are identified based on the area that they affect inside the human body. These include; Pleural Mesothelioma, Peritoneal Mesothelioma and Pericardial Mesothelioma.
From the terminology used to name these different kinds of Mesothelioma it can be inferred that when the cells around the lungs get malign then the cancer is termed as pleural Mesothelioma; when it is the cells around the stomach and the intestines then it is named as Peritoneal Mesothelioma while in the case when it is the fibers around the heart which come under the grip of these cancerous cells then the cancer is termed as pericardial Mesothelioma.
The reason why Mesothelioma cancer is tagged as a terminal form of cancer is because of the inability towards curing it. The major factor which contributes to this is the fact that most of the symptoms which could indicate towards Mesothelioma remain hidden and incubated in the body for a very long time and therefore identification of this cancer becomes very difficult.
When the symptoms of Mesothelioma do appear the condition of the patient has already worsened thereby making the treatment all the more difficult. Once identified surgery is generally the option which is most frequently used against Mesothelioma. But with the progress in sciency there are several other modes of treatment which are being considered and thought upon to target curing Mesothelioma. All these other modes of treatment towards Mesothelioma are right now in their clinical trial stages and once approved and proved successful one should be hopeful the mystery surrounding the understanding of Mesothelioma and its effective cure will become all the more viable and simple.
